Amalio Jusino, the Associate Director of Campus Safety at Williams, emphasized the importance of preparedness in such critical situations. He noted, "We had an individual that went into sudden cardiac arrest. The fact that there was such an awareness among so many student athletes was crucial." Such proactive awareness can often be the difference between life and death.
The Power of Training
Jusino explained that prior training sessions conducted at the same location equipped responders with the skills necessary to act swiftly. "In fact, some of the first responders were a part of that exercise we did," he revealed. This training was evident in how calmly the various teams—from the campus safety officers to local police and paramedics—executed their roles in the emergency response. Within minutes, they provided vital medical attention to the athlete using advanced technology.
Life-Saving Technology in Action
During the incident, equipment such as automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and a Lucas chest compression device were deployed almost immediately. These devices, designed to be user-friendly, talk the user through the process, demonstrating just how accessible life-saving technology has become. "There was a cardiac monitor from the ambulance and three AEDs on-site when this student athlete went into cardiac arrest," Jusino said, showcasing the readiness of the equipment and personnel.
